It’s sort of understood that if you work “full time,” you’re expected to put in 40ish hours a week. And traditionally, those 40 hours probably fall sometime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day.

And for some people, that 8-to-4 or 9-to-5 schedule is great (after all, Dolly Parton did write a song about it). But for others…not so much.

Personally, I love the flexibility to stay up late working (it’s almost 1 a.m. as I write this, which tends to be when I hit my creative stride more often than not, which is why a flexible schedule is awesome for me), or take an afternoon off here or there to enjoy some time outside (especially important this time of year, when it gets dark by 4:30…)

More and more companies (especially in the tech industry!) are allowing their employees more flexible schedules, whether that means working from home some or all of the time, or just coming into the office according to their own schedules.

And the benefits for both employees and companies abound!

Psst! Download the free Ultimate Guide to Getting a Remote Job You Love for insider info on how to land the perfect remote job for you!

Benefits of Flexible Schedules

You might already be thinking of all the things you could do if you had a more flexible schedule. There are tons of benefits, for sure.

You can more easily meet family schedules if you aren’t required to be at work until 5 every day. This can have a huge impact on employees who are the primary caregivers for another family member. Since you won’t have to ask for time off during the day, you can just adapt your schedule as needed.

You can cut your commute. Does commuting stress you out every day? Are you sick of wasting money on gas or public transportation? Or worried about the impact your commute is having on the environment? If you work from home even just one or two days a week, that’s a huge plus.

You can commute when other people aren’t. Even if you aren’t working remotely, having the option to come in at 10 instead of 8 means you’re on your way to work when everyone else has already arrived, cutting down on traffic or congestion on public transport.

You can work when you’re most productive. I already mentioned I like writing late at night, which would be hard if I was expected to sit in an office from 9 to 5 every day. No one wants to bring work home with them on top of an 8+-hour day. But as long as I’m available for meetings during “normal” hours and my hours don’t interfere with how others are working, then no one really cares if I’m writing after midnight.

Remote Jobs Can Be the Best Flexible Options

If you’d love a job with a flexible schedule, then a remote job is the most obvious choice. Even most entry-level remote jobs offer at least some degree of flexibility.
