I finished Skillcrush class AND got my first job as a front-end developer. Woot woot! Skillcrush FTW! I am working at a web dev agency. We have some pretty big clients, and also work with a lot of graphic design agencies that don’t have the capacity to code the sites they design in house. So far, I am loving it!!

What You'll Learn In This Class:
Week 1: A Command Line & Git Safari
During the first week of class you will go on a Command Line and Git Safari! You will momentarily leave your WordPress behind (don't worry, you'll be back) and learn to interact with your computer the old fashioned way: VIA UNIX COMMANDS. Then you'll learn all about the magic of version control. Seriously, you won't believe that you ever lived without it.
Week 2: Learn how to work on an existing website
In week two you’ll return to the world of WordPress and learn how to use your new Unix and Git skills to take the codebase from an existing website and begin to build upon it.
Week 3: Transform WordPress from a blog into a full on CMS
In the third week of class, you'll learn how to extend WordPress into a robust CMS using custom post types, and how to make those custom post types idiot proof with custom fields! Then, you'll get practice delivering on some of the most common client request like bangin' SEO and importing content from other systems.
Week 4: The final WordPress bells & whistles
In the fourth and final week of class, you will learn how to do FUN things in WordPress like interactive contact forms and silly 404 pages.

Caro is not only the Class Manager here at Skillcrush, but also our WordPress Instructor. She's a front-end developer with a background in higher education who tried nearly every role in tech before she found the hat she liked best (teacher). When Caro isn't in front of her laptop, she's working her way through a stack of comics with a mug of Diet Coke.
Ann is an eager student of all things web development and hacks away at various code projects with the passion of a zealot. She is also a mom of a small pack of minions who will one day do her bidding. During her off-parent duties, when she is not crafting code, Ann loves to sing, play the mandolin, curl up with a good sci-fi/fantasy book or take long walks with her dogs.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What previous knowledge do I need to take this class?
You need to be familiar with HTML and CSS. If you’re not sure if your level of skill will be enough for the class, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more. You don’t need to be an HTML and CSS expert, but you should be familiar with HTML and HTML5 tags and know how to code and style a simple website.
If you’re an absolute beginner, you can start with our Web Designer Blueprint or Web Developer Blueprint. There’s absolutely NO prior knowledge needed for either one of those, and they’ll both prepare you really well to do the WordPress Blueprint.
I’m looking to transition into a more technical role at work. Will this class help me?
Yes! User experience and web design are some of the most in-demand skills that employers are hiring for right now.
There are many places to start in tech, but learning the fundamentals of web design and creating deliverables and projects from scratch – both of which you’ll do in this class – will give you a wide variety of the most important tech skills. So, you’ll leave this class with a solid understanding with which you can continue your professional transition into tech.
I work full time. Can I fit this class into my busy schedule?
Absolutely! We recommend setting aside about an hour a day to engage with the class materials and your classmates and instructors, but you can shift this around depending on your weekly schedule.
Some of our students can’t devote an hour every day to the class but can study for longer periods of time over the weekend — This is totally fine too, and our material is always available for you when you need it.
What if I get behind in the class? Will the lessons still be available to me?
Yes, absolutely! You’ll continue to have access to the class well beyond the “official” class dates so you can catch up or review whenever and whatever you like.
What kind of computer or software do I need for this class?
Nothing fancy! You just need a computer with access to the web, of course. You should be able to stream YouTube or Vimeo videos and download / upload materials like photos and documents.
We recommend a Mac for the class and for your future career in tech as Macs tend to be the industry standard. But a Windows PC will work fine too.
You don’t need to have any special software before you start the class. We’ll introduce you to all the software or apps you need as you go through the class, and there are free versions or trials of all of them available for both Mac and Windows.
Do you provide any printable materials I can access?
Yes indeed! We have several very popular cheatsheets that we tell our students to print out and carry with them or tape up around the house. You’d be surprised how much you can actually learn by just looking at them for a few minutes a day!
How do I know if this class is for me?
This class is for you if:
- You want to start your own business or increase your salary, but you don’t know how to begin.
- You’re itching to code your own websites.
- You have dabbled in WordPress sites but need to learn the fundamentals.
- You’ve been meaning to make your own website FOREVER.
- You like learning to be fun and collaborative.
This class is NOT for you if:
- You’ve already designed and coded your own custom WordPress websites for several clients.
- You’re looking to learn advanced topics such as creating your own plugins from scratch.
- You want to make mobile apps.
- You think learning has to be serious.
- You don’t like fun or collaboration.
When does the class meet?
The class doesn’t meet at fixed times. All the lessons are online, and you have access to them 24/7 so you can study whenever is best for you.
Throughout the class, we send you an email every weekday morning to help keep you on track, and then you’re welcome to work on the lessons whenever it fits your schedule.
The only “scheduled” class events are the circle chat, live group office hours and master class. But these are all optional, and, if you can’t make the scheduled time, you can read a transcript of the circle chat, ask questions in the online student community or watch the recording of the master class later. So, there’s always a way to fit the class into your life!
How do office hours work?
We offer live office hours using Google+ Hangouts. Group office hours give us the chance to help as many students as possible. And we’ve found that, since students tend to have similar questions and challenges, you’ll learn a lot from hearing answers to other students’ questions too. That said, you’ll also have the chance to ask your own questions from the instructor and make sure you get the answers you need as well.
How does the online student community work?
We use a service called Mightybell for our online student community. It’s completely free, and we’ll send you an invitation to a “Circle” before your class starts.
In your Mightybell Circle, you can meet your classmates, ask questions about the lessons, get feedback on your work, share tech resources and much more! Plus, it’s a great chance to get to know other people who are just as excited about tech as you are and to start networking and making great friends and career connections.
Is Skillcrush only for women? I’m a guy and want to learn.
