READY FOR A NEW CAREER?

But not sure where to start? Find out if a tech career is right for you.

TAKE THE 3-MINUTE QUIZ

7 (FREE) Speed and Performance Tests You Need For Your Site

As children we are taught, being the fastest doesn’t mean you are the best. Slow and steady wins the race. That is true for some things. But it is absolutely not true when it comes to loading time for a site. How fast a site loads is crucial when it comes to SEO and overall User Experience. Luckily, there are free and great tools out there that will help you keep your site in top notch shape.

1. Google PageSpeed Insights

The name is pretty explanatory. It gives you insights about your website’s speed. This free tool will tell you about the performance issues it finds on your site, as well as give your site a performance grade.

2. Pingdom Website Speed Test

This awesome looking tool gives you everything you need to know about your site’s performance including loading time, page size, a detailed page analysis, and more. You can sort and filter this list in different ways to identify performance bottlenecks.

3. OctaGate Site Timer

This one shows you a waterfall timeline of how objects on the web page you’re testing is being downloaded.  It also tells you how long it takes for your web page to load completely.

4. GTMetrix

This one combines two of the most popular web performance tools – Yslow (YSlow analyzes web pages and then determines why they’re slow based on Yahoo!’s rules for high performance web sites, and then offers tips for improvement. When analyzing a web page, YSlow deducts points for each infraction of a rule and then applies a grade to each rule) and Google Page Speed which also helps you improve.

5. Which Loads Faster

Another one you can probably guess. This tool compares load times of two sites side-by-side. This can be great for seeing how you measure up against competitors.

6. SEOmastering.com Site Speed Checker

Take your comparison even further with this tool. It allows you to enter up to 10 URLs to test simultaneously.

7. ShowSlow

Show Slow is an open source tool that helps monitor various website performance metrics over time. It captures the results of YSlow, Page Speed, WebPageTest and dynaTrace AJAX Edition rankings and graphs them to help you really understand the performance of your site.
